Coleman Rail, an integral member of the Geotech Group, has been awarded the $102m design and construction package for the redevelopment of Preston Tram Workshops. The award follows the Preston Plate Shop Redevelopment project, recently completed by Coleman Rail.
The biggest tram depot redevelopment in Melbourne’s history will transform Preston Workshops by providing tram stabling, operational and maintenance facilities. The project will turn the facility into a state-of-the-art maintenance workshop for 50 new generation E-Class trams, as well as the entire Melbourne tram fleet.
The project is a significant part of the Victorian Government’s $809m Tram Procurement Program, being delivered by Yarra Trams on behalf of Public Transport Victoria.
The 18-acre site on St Georges Road is presently a heavy maintenance and servicing facility which will remain in operation throughout the delivery of this new project. As a result, Coleman Rail is required to maintain Yarra Trams’ workshops and depot functionality, continuity of fleet access and uninterrupted use of services for the duration of the project.
The redevelopment, which includes works outside the site in Miller Street, St Georges Road and High Street, entails a series of coordinated and staged sub-projects, with progressive handover of agreed areas and decanting of existing maintenance and operational functions.
The scope of works includes:
- Laying 7km of new tram tracks within the workshops;
- Reconfiguring the heavy maintenance facilities;
- Creating a new tram servicing area and sanding facilities;
- Extending storage buildings;
- New workshop amenities and operations, administration and training facilities;
- New substations and project workshop; and
- Installing a tram wash and an automatic wheel measuring facility.
Existing heritage-listed features will be integrated into the new depot.
Construction is expected to commence in August of 2014 and is scheduled for completion in early-2016.
