The latest Professional Development session for our younger Engineers saw them visit the Vicmesh Fabrication Plant in Dandenong, where they were given an amazing insight into its operation.

Vicmesh is our preferred supplier of quality reinforcement products and our relationship goes back more than 8 years, to a time when pile cages were handmade! Now the system is fully automated, using state of the art machinery from Germany and Italy, and it was fascinating to watch all of the machinery in action – from 1.5 tonne coils being turned into 3 tonne coils; coiled bar being straightened; ribmesh being made; ligs being shaped; and pile cages being manufactured.

Geotech's Construction Manager, Ty Newman, who oversaw the tour, said: "It was great for our Engineers to observe some of the challenges associated with the prefabrication of our pile cages."

The feedback from our Engineers was very complimentary, who found it instructive to hear from the source the importance of rationalising cage sizes.
