Location: Melbourne, Victoria
Client: Yarra Trams
Role of Coleman Rail: Head Contractor
Project Summary: Construct Only; Brownfield Redevelopments; Complex Multidisciplinary; Light Rail
Coleman Rail was the Head Contractor on this $1.5 million Yarra Tram project which involved the complete renewal and partial realignment of St Kilda Road tram tracks from Domain Road to just south of Toorak Road, including switch renewal at Domain Interchange. St Kilda Road is a main thoroughfare into Melbourne's CBD for bike, car and tram traffic. Due to the criticality of this route, a short sharp occupation of the road and tram network was required. Construction occurred over Easter for a period of 5 days (6 April 2012 to 11 April 2012), when peak hour traffic was at a minimum. The site operated 24 hours a day, with 12 hour rolling shifts. The job was completed well within the program and with minimal disruption to commuters and general public.
The Yarra Trams contract was awarded for the construction of:
- 600m of dual tram track between Domain Road and just south of Toorak Road.
- Installation of a switch and turnout at Domain Interchange, and relocation of a crossover at Albert Road.
- Laying of conduits, installation of pits, concrete, asphalting and all associated works between Domain Road and just south of Toorak Road.
Coleman Rail employed their internally designed and purpose-built clipping machine to prefabricate large track panels on site with great success, reducing time required for track installation and significantly reducing the potential for manual labour related injuries.
